Types Of Braces: Three Ways To Achieve A Beautiful Smile

Corrective orthodontic treatments are an investment that yields long-term benefits, both cosmetic and functional. Aligning your teeth can also give you more confidence as you speak, eat, and socialize!

However, not all procedures are the same – some types of braces have higher success rates than others. If you’re looking to get a new and improved smile, the first step is determining which braces are right for you.

For the best results, get recommendations from a trusted dental professional. Visit Dugas Dental & Carr Orthodontics for a one-on-one consultation!

Are You A Good Candidate For Braces?

An orthodontist will assess your teeth during a dental examination to determine if you’re a likely candidate for corrective procedures. Dental professionals look out for the following conditions:

  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Uneven bite
  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Open bite
  • Cross bite
  • Overcrowding

The Three Different Types Of Braces

There are no one-size-fits-all solutions for braces. Depending on your needs and goals, we may recommend one of three different types of braces:

Metal Braces

Traditional braces use brackets and wires to move your teeth into the correct position. Adjustments are made every 6 to 8 weeks with a treatment period lasting, on average, for 15 to 24 months.

Because of their appearance, metal braces aren’t always the first choice among adults. They are ideal for patients who want a more affordable option and don’t mind how the metal looks on their teeth. Kids may also enjoy “customizing” their braces with optional colored elastic bands.

Ceramic Braces

Similar to traditional metal braces, ceramic braces use clear or tooth-colored brackets to reposition your teeth. This renders them almost invisible to the eye, especially when they’re well-made. They are ideal for patients who want a more esthetic, braces option.

Invisalign or Clear Aligners

Clear aligners are a very popular option on the market today. Not only do they help patients meet their cosmetic and functional dental goals, but they’re also removable, comfortable, and invisible.

Clear aligners gradually correct teeth through multiple sets of aligner trays which must be worn at least 22 hours a day. Treatment usually lasts 12-18 months, but not following the treatment plan correctly can extend this. It is still essential to visit the orthodontist once every 6-10 weeks to monitor your progress and ensure you’re on track.

Like ceramic braces, clear aligners may also stain over time. However, trays are replaced every 1 to 2 weeks, so this isn’t a major issue for most people. Also, you need to remove your clear aligners prior to eating or drinking anything but water.
