A dental bridge, also called a “fixed partial denture,” is an artificial way to replace missing teeth. A bridge is essentially 3 (or more) crowns that are connected together and cemented in place, making it non-removable. The part of the bridge in the middle, where the space is, is called a “pontic.” It looks just like a tooth, but has a rounded underneath that rests tightly against the gums.

Bridges can be made from porcelain, metal or gold. They are usually completed in two visits, with one visit to prepare the teeth and one visit two weeks later to cement the bridge in place.

Bridges must have stable teeth on both sides of the gap in order to be successful. The downside of a bridge is that the teeth on both sides of the gap must be ground down in order to hold the bridge.

If you have a missing tooth, make sure to ask Dr. Dugas if a bridge would be a good option for you.
