When should I consider seeing an orthodontist?
If you’re experiencing difficulty biting, speaking, or smiling, you should consider going to an orthodontist. With a proper dental exam, specialists can make the necessary orthodontic treatment recommendations.
Is early orthodontic treatment necessary?
Two-phase orthodontics may be recommended for children between the ages of 7 and 10 who have bite and alignment issues. The earlier in life that orthodontic issues are solved, the fewer problems they’ll experience during adolescence and adulthood.
What’s the difference between phase one and phase two orthodontics?
During phase one, we move teeth to make way for permanent teeth. In phase two, we use braces or removable oral appliances (e.g. Invisalign or clear aligners) to help teeth align correctly.
Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?
It’s never too late to improve your teeth! Many adults can greatly benefit from orthodontics even if they’ve never undergone orthodontic treatment before.
What types of orthodontic treatments are best for me?
Oral appliances such as braces, retainers, or aligners are ideal for people with:
- Crooked teeth
- A misaligned bite
- Gaps between teeth
For more severe cases, the following surgical orthodontics may be needed:
- Upper jaw surgery
- Lower jaw surgery
- Chin surgery
Do I need to get braces for both my upper and lower teeth?
You can get individual braces for your upper or lower teeth if the issues are isolated to either the top or bottom. However, most cases call for both upper and lower braces to make sure the jaw, bone, and dental structures are in perfect alignment.
How often do braces need to be adjusted?
Braces must be adjusted every 6 to 8 weeks, depending on your response to the treatment. Keep in mind that tightening braces too often may cause damage or weaken teeth. An experienced orthodontist will keep your teeth safe and only adjust as necessary.
How do I care for braces after getting them?
You must practice good oral hygiene and stick to a braces-friendly diet. Don’t eat foods with tough textures like popcorn, chips, or bony meat. You should also try to avoid drinking hot beverages while wearing clear aligners.
How long do I need to wear braces and retainers?
It can take 1 to 2.5 years before you complete an entire orthodontic treatment plan. The timeframe may vary depending on how well your teeth respond to the treatment.
